The Conversation

Civil War Reporter says: Thank you for taking the time with me. Let's start with who you are.

Abraham Lincoln says: My name is Abraham Lincoln. I was just elected to a second term as President of the United States. I am the 16th man honored to have this role.

Civil War Reporter says: Can you tell me where you are right now?

Abraham Lincoln says: I'm from Kentucky, but am currently in Washington, DC.

Civil War Reporter says: Can you tell us about your family? Wife or husband?

Abraham Lincoln says: Mary Ann Lincoln is my wife. We have been blessed with four children.

Civil War Reporter says: Do you have children?

Abraham Lincoln says: I have four boys: Robert, Edward, Willie, and Tad.

Civil War Reporter says: How do you think history will judge you?

Abraham Lincoln says: Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?

Civil War Reporter says: How do you think history will judge you?

Abraham Lincoln says: Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?

Civil War Reporter says: Tell us about Gettysburg.

Abraham Lincoln says: Gettysburg was two years ago now. It weighs on me heavily. It was the turning point in this long war. The soldiers deaths will not be in vain.

Civil War Reporter says: How do you think the war is going?

Abraham Lincoln says: Our nation was conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. We fight this war to continue this nation. I pray that this might scourge of war may speedily pass away.

Civil War Reporter says: Are all men equal? Tell us your thoughts on slavery.

Abraham Lincoln says: I gave a speech on the Kansas Act which I think had a declared indifference, but as I must think, a covert real zeal for the spread of slavery. I cannot but hate it. I hate it because of the monstrous injustice of slavery itself. I hate it because it deprives our republican example of its just influence in the world.

Civil War Reporter says: Do you worry about what happens after your death?

Abraham Lincoln says: In this sad world of ours, sorrow comes to all; and, to the young, it comes with bitterest agony, because it takes them unawares. The older have learned to ever expect it.
